Visitors can celebrate different forms of art at the Imas including spirograph art, Surrealism, Mexican folk art, and music. A special performance by Musical Living Academy students will take place at 5:00 p.m. Guided tours in the galleries and outdoor sculpture areas will be provided throughout the evening. Recently opened exhibits include Cosmic Connections: The Metaphysical Practice of Kirk Clark and light sculptures from Jinju, South Korea.
At 6:00 p.m. UTRGV philosophy professor Dr. Remei Capdevila Werning will present a talk entitled “The Impossible Question – What is Art?” The IMAS has partnered with UTRGV’s Department of Philosophy to present Philosophy for Everyone talks, an ongoing series of philosophy lectures at the museum for a broad audience.
IMAS Director of Education, Claudia Martinez Gray, encourages visitors to have a different kind of art experience. “Family Fun Nights are all about learning by trying new things with your family and friends. I wish for visitors to attempt to make different types of art, to better understand the different fields of art. From drawing to philosophy, Art Bash will have something for all age levels to explore.”
The IMAS is hosting special giant light sculptures on museum grounds for visitors to view during the month of February. The City of Jinju, South Korea, has loaned these sculptures to the IMAS following their special appearances in the McAllen Holiday Parade and at the McAllen Convention Center. This collaboration bridges both communities through festivals and cultural events such as the IMAS Art Bash on February 6 and Lunar New Year Festival on February 8.
International dignitaries including Mr. Jung Jae Min, Vice Mayor of Jinju toured the IMAS in early December to see first-hand the site for this art form and the treasures of the museum’s Mexican and Latin American Folk Art Exhibit and experience a taste of South Texas arts and culture.
