PHARR – Educators from two Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD schools, Clover Elementary in San Juan and Kelly-Pharr Elementary, were surprised with grants from the PSJA Education Foundation on Friday, Sept. 28, 2018, to help expand science, technology, engineering, and mathematics or STEM education in the elementary level.

According to PSJA Education Foundation Member Laura De La Garza, the grants will be used to purchase Ozobots and Bee-Bot’s, which are programmable robots.

“It’s exciting to see PSJA ISD taking students to the next level at an early age,” said De La Garza who also works as the Wildlife Biologist for the US Fish & Wildlife Service. “As the Foundation, we are excited to be supporting projects like these that build that passion for science among students.”

Clover Elementary Science Lab Teacher Marisela Romero was awarded a $1,197.93 grant to purchase Ozobots that will help her students learn computer programming.

“I’m very grateful for this grant. These Ozobots will help my kids learn how to code,” said Romero. “Thank you so much to the Foundation for their support.”

At Kelly-Pharr Elementary, their $598.41 grant will go toward purchasing nine Bee-Bots that will help students as young as Kinder, learn concepts like counting, sequencing, estimation, and problem-solving in fun and interactive ways.
