Attempted Robbery Nets 7 in Jail, 5 Charged with Failure to Identify

On July 28, 2018, at approximately 12:24 pm the McAllen Police Department responded to a report of a robbery attempt at the Deutsch and Deutsch jewelry store inside La Plaza Mall.  Seven persons of interest, all males, were taken into custody.  There are no other known suspects at this time.

This was not an active shooter event.  Breaking glass cases may have been interpreted as shooting.  There were no discharged firearms involved in this incident.  It was not a shooting event.  We had no injuries associated with this incident at this time.

The investigation of this case is ongoing.  However, through additional sources of this newspaper, it was reported that they were wearing 4 layers of shirts, apparently, the plan was to run and rip off layers to change their appearance so as to get lost in the crowd.

According to a release by Texas Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, “This incident left shoppers severely distraught as some were rushed to the hospital for anxiety attacks.” The police department said that the mall has returned to normal operations.
