La Guelaguetza – From Oaxaca to McAllen this Thursday October 26

Texas Border Business

La Guelaguetza is an annual indigenous cultural event in Mexico that takes place in the city of Oaxaca, capital of the state of Oaxaca, as well as in nearby villages. The celebration centers on traditional dancing in costume in groups, often gender-separated groups, as is traditional. Each costume (traje) and dance usually has a local indigenous historical and cultural meaning.

40 dancers will be performing in Mcallen representing different autochthonous communities in Oaxaca and that perform every year, in the actual Gelaguetza festival in the State of Oaxaca.

In addition, an exhibit of over 50 pieces of Alhebrijes sculptures and beautiful sand made rugs made by Oaxaca artisans will be on display for attendees to enjoy.

La Gelaguetza will take place at the McAllen Performing Arts Center and is FREE to attend.

Bring your family and enjoy from some of Mexico’s most beautiful traditions, La Gelaguetza! For sponsorship opportunities or more information about Sabor A Mexico Mexican Cuisine Celebration or Vibrant Heritage Mexican Artisan Expo, please contact Luis Cantu at the Chamber at 682-2871.
