Tips to help you become a serious, popular blogger

I’ve been blogging since I was 16. My blog was always just a place for me to vent and share my deepest and darkest thoughts with the world. I never intended to be famous for my writings. I just wanted to be heard. However, with time, I started enjoying the comments, likes and shares and my heart would skip a beat every time someone told me how good my words made them feel or how great it was to find someone who can express their own feelings on their behalf.

Unfortunately, my busy schedule took over and I no longer had time to write poetry or short stories. My emphasis turned to a more serious approach to writing and since then I’ve spent countless hours learning how to grow my new blog and the number of my readers. Luckily, this has taught me a few tips and tactics that I would like to share with you in hopes that they could help you become a Popular blogger.

• Be patient

All bloggers start off with the same number of followers/readers. The number is ZERO! Soon after, supportive friends and relatives will start reading your blog and slowly, your audience base will grow. So get the idea that your blog will catch on like a wildfire out of your head as that rarely ever happens. Instead, be patient and understand that nothing good comes easy.

• Be particular

When you start your blog, you should have a good idea about what kind of content you will be sharing and whom you will be sharing it with. Remember this, there is no shortage of blogs out there so to make yours stand out, you need to be specific about your topics. Moreover, you need to understand the role you will be playing in the entertainment or educational experience of your audience.

• Be consistent

People usually hate unpredictability. This is why you need to be consistent with the type, quantity and scheduling of the content you share. It is true that you will not always be inspired to write 10-20 posts a week. However, in blogging more is more as long as the quality doesn’t suffer.

• Go for variety

I think of The Global Now as a social online magazine and I treat it that way by keeping our content fresh, interesting and varied. I also found that adding sections such as startup reviews and interviews with inspiring women kept things fresh and exciting. Try to do the same and don’t hesitate to add video posts, infographics and the likes to get your ideas across.

• Use quality images

The last thing you want is for your audience to see your blog as dull and boring. To avoid this and become a popular blogger, you need to look for and add high quality and relevant images which will make your blog layout more appealing to your readers. Make sure that you always credit and link to the source of your images.

• Be a helpful source

One of the things I love about our online magazine is that you can always find easy to read yet helpful articles about many topics of interest. Make sure that your content is helpful to your audience and that it provides them with solutions to their problems. Moreover, spend some time understanding the needs and challenges of your readers and create content to tackle those needs and challenges.

• Find a nucleus

Back in the day when I used to write for thoughtpick.com, we chose Learn Social Media by Example as our nucleus or anchor if you will. We shared other content of course but those posts were what attracted most visitors to our site. Find your anchor and use it to hook more readers and turn them into your blog loyalists.

• Be you

Your blog is not a newsletter or an annual report. You need to be able to inject part of your personality into it, otherwise it becomes ‘just another blog’. Furthermore, your content should feel real and close to the reader as much as possible. So make sure you add your own point of views and experiences to make it more credible and unique.

• Build a community

One hand cannot clap alone, trust me I’ve tried it out! If you want to increase traffic to your blog, you need a loyal community to back you up. To cultivate a community, you need to spend time connecting and engaging with people online and through social media channels. Moreover, you need to answer questions, reply to comments and acknowledge your audience’s presence.

• Be findable

What good is a great blog that no one can find? To have a steady number of growing followers, you will need to keep an eye out on elements such as the keywords you are using, the URLs your are creating as well as your headlines of course. Neglecting these will cost you visitors and exposure.

• Be shareable

Social sharing and blogging go together like the sun and the beach! You have to make it very easy for your audience to share your content by adding social share buttons for a variety of platforms. Moreover, to ensure that influencers take note of your content, you have to support their work, share their content and leave them smart comments.
