Combating Mold In Your Portland Home

Tags: mold
Even if you don’t live in a particularly humid environment, unlike us here in Portland,  it’s surprisingly easy for Mold to set up shop in your home. We’re here to help you get informed on why mold might be growing in your home, and how toprevent it from damaging your health.
In addition to being unsightly and potentially damaging to your home, mold spores are allergens that cause sneezing and congestion in many people. By cleaning up mold and preventing it from growing, both you and your home will be happier and healthier.
What Is Mold?
“Mold” is a general term used to describe certain kinds of fungi that often appear as a discolored or fuzzy-looking coating on the surface of something. We’ve all seen mold on a piece of fruit that’s been left out too long, but fans of blue cheese will tell you that the right kind of mold can be a flavor enhancer! Just as mold will eventually break down the surface of an old piece of fruit, surfaces in your home are susceptible to being damaged by these tiny organisms.
What Causes Mold To Grow?
Warm, humid environments are prime for mold growth. Homes between 70 and 90 degrees and with a relative humidity of 50% or higher represent the ideal conditions for most kinds of mold to grow. Mold spores - the tiny particles that are released in order for mold to reproduce - can survive in drier conditions and in temperatures ranging from 32 to 120 degrees. In addition to liking it warm and damp, homes with stagnant air are much more likely to develop mold problems.
Managing Moisture Problems
If you’re concerned that your home is an ideal place for mold growth, controlling moisture is a key preventative measure. Some of the most effective ways to keep humidity down and prevent mold growth in your home are:
Running a fan or opening windows to vent steam after a hot bath or shower
Installing double-paned windows to cut down on moisture accumulation during cold weather
Purchasing a portable dehumidifier
Removing rugs or carpets from the most humid rooms of your home
Repairing leaks in and around your homethat create puddles or accumulation of water
Getting Rid Of Mold
If you’ve discovered mold already growing in your home, you’ll need to actively remove it. On hard surfaces like walls and window panes, washing with soap and water will kill most kinds of mold. Be sure to let surfaces dry completely, as leaving them wet may simply encourage re-growth. For surfaces that have been stained or discolored, you may choose to use a stronger chemical agent like bleach, but be sure to follow proper instructions for dilution, and protect your skin and respiratory system during cleaning.
For items like clothing, carpets, and furniture, mold removal may be impossible, and your only solution is to dispose of the affected items. It may be hard to see them go, but removal is the only way to ensure your home will be completely free of mold. Also don't forget, if you have a mold problem, get your ducts cleaned after getting rid of the mold problem. This will ensure a complete removal of the spores and make your HVAC system healthier.
