On International Women’s Day, 8 March 2024, we had the pleasure of welcoming An Tánaiste Micheál Martin to officially open our new Mccarthy + Co Solicitors offices in the West Cork Technology Park, Clonakilty. The date was particularly meaningful as it marked the legacy of our firm’s founder, Ann McCarthy, who started this journey 37 years ago.

Ann’s story is one of resilience and determination. Not satisfied with having had successful careers as a theatre nurse and a transatlantic flight attendant in the 1960s and ’70s, which were ended by the marriage ban then in force, Ann went on to requalify as a solicitor in 1984 and set up her own business as McCarthy + Co in 1987, all while raising a family of four young boys.

Supported by her husband, Joe McCarthy, who had been a solicitor since 1969, the firm has always been a family endeavour. Today, the McCarthy sons – Flor, John, Joseph and Paul continue to build on what our parents started. The firm now also comprises a wider extended McCarthy + Co. family of extremely valued team members.

Based in West Cork, our firm provides specialist nationwide services in medical negligence and personal injury, serving clients nationwide through our online platform, mccarthy.ie. Our new state-of-the-art headquarters in the West Cork Technology Park are custom-designed to provide exceptionally well-appointed, ergonomic, and high-tech facilities, enabling our growing team to deliver an extraordinary customer experience to our client base across Ireland.

This young and vibrant team has grown to over 20 members since it was founded by Ann McCarthy as a sole pioneering female solicitor in 1987 and we have already added four more new members since moving to our new home at the start of the year.
