You may have noticed that a commitment to Introduce Statements of Truth (to replace affidavits sworn on oath) was included in the Programme for Government. That’s unreservedly good news and very welcome.

But I suspect that there’s lots of stuff in the Programme for Government that may not get delivered upon in the intense competition for attention and resources that will have started on Saturday.

So we really have to get the message through to this new government that the introduction of Statements of Truth is really important and urgent and needs to be given top priority in terms of legislative change.

This needs to be a treated as an urgent Covid-19 remedial measure. When we have a second wave (and that’s quite deliberately when not if) we need to be better prepared to be able to continue with normal life based on what we have learned since March.

As far as the administration of justice is concerned (which in effect means to keep your businesses that we do for you moving on your behalf) we need to be able to do as many things as possible remotely, and that includes the completion of the affidavits that are essential to keep litigation, probate, enduring powers of attorney and other key legal aspects of our lives moving.

You may recall that I started a petition calling on the Minister for Justice to introduce Statements of Truth and I want to deliver the petition to the new Minister this week, so that she has it on her desk in her first week in office to emphasise the urgency of this question.
