Election Commission Suspends SPO In West Tripura For Model Code Of Conduct Violation

The Election Commission in West Tripura has suspended a Special Police Officer (SPO) for attending a political event despite the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) being in force in the state.

According to a press statement from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Superintendent of Police (West Tripura), Kiran Kumar, took action to suspend SPO Suman Hossain on the directions of the poll body for violating the MCC. Hossain was assigned to the Mohanpir police station in West Tripura.

On March 28, he was seen attending a political party event under the jurisdiction of 2/30 polling station, the statement said.
As soon as his act was brought to the notice of the Election Commission, stern action was taken against him, it added.

Previously, a female teacher faced similar repercussions for violating the Model Code of Conduct. It’s worth noting that Special Police Officers (SPOs) are unarmed personnel assigned to police stations, primarily tasked with maintaining law and order in relatively calm areas.

The upcoming elections in Tripura are scheduled to take place in two phases, with the West Tripura constituency voting on April 19 and the East Tripura constituency on April 26. Vote counting will occur on June 4. The national Lok Sabha elections, covering 543 seats, will be conducted in seven phases from April 19 to June 1, with nearly 97 crore eligible voters across the country.
