Rishi Sunak, the new UK Prime Minister, rejigged his Cabinet on Tuesday, retaining Jeremy Hunt as Chancellor and Ben Wallace as Defence Secretary while adding Dominic Raab as Deputy Prime Minister and Suella Braverman as Home Secretary.
The Conservative Party tweeted, “Jeremy Hunt re-appointed as UK Chancellor of the Exchequer.” 11 days ago, following instability in the financial markets caused by the mini-budget and its platform of unfunded tax cuts, former prime minister Liz Truss named Hunt chancellor.
Hunt, who took over for Kwasi Kwarteng, revoked almost all of Truss’ tax cuts and is credited with helping to boost market confidence. He was thus anticipated by many experts to continue serving as chancellor.
The Conservative Party said, “Dominic Raab has been named as Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary.”
Raab was one of the few Sunak supporters who continued to promote him throughout the summer’s Tory leadership race even after Truss’ win was all but assured.
After declaring last week that he couldn’t support Boris Johnson as prime minister while the Partygate investigation was ongoing, he vowed his support for Sunak.
Raab, a fervent Brexit supporter, was appointed Brexit Secretary in July 2018 and resigned a few months later in protest at Theresa May’s Brexit plan.
Ben Wallace has since been reappointed by Sunak as the defence secretary.
Wallace kept the position of Defense Secretary in Liz Truss’ administration after being nominated to it in July 2019. Given that he has been in charge of the UK’s response to the situation in Ukraine, today’s continuance was expected.
Less than a week after quitting her position as Home Secretary in Truss’ cabinet, Suella Braverman has been re-appointed.
When Truss was chosen as the new prime minister in September, she was given the important position of home secretary. She did, however, quit last Wednesday due to an “error”.
She claimed in her letter of resignation that she had violated the ministerial code by sending an official document from her personal email account.
Additionally, she criticised Truss, claiming that it had “broken important commitments that were made to voters.”
As the person in charge of policing, counterterrorism, and UK borders, Braverman is back.
Alok Sharma, a British minister of Indian descent, was demoted in PM Sunak’s cabinet move.
After a large number of Truss’ ministers resigned or were fired, Sunak reorganised his Cabinet.
One of Boris Johnson’s most ardent allies, Jacob Rees-Mogg, has left his position as business secretary, while Brandon Lewis has left his position as justice secretary.
According to Downing Street, James Cleverly has been reappointed as foreign secretary.
In September, Liz Truss appointed Cleverly to the position of foreign secretary. Since 2015, he has served as the MP for Essex’s Braintree.
In place of Wendy Morton, Simon Hart has been named the new top whip in Rishi Sunak’s government.
Since 2010, Hart has served as the representative for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire in parliament. From 2019 until 2022, he was Boris Johnson’s Secretary of State for Wales.
Despite originally supporting Boris Johnson in the leadership contest, Nadhim Zahawi will continue to serve in the Cabinet.
He has been appointed party chairman and a minister without portfolio, giving him a post in the Cabinet without any clear duties. Jake Berry has been replaced.

Sunak met King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, where he later assumed the title of UK Prime Minister.
