According to a Paris-based media watchdog, Pakistan is one of the world’s deadliest nations for journalists, with three to four killings each year that are frequently connected to corruption or illicit trade and go unpunished.

Reporters Without Borders warned that any journalist who violates the guidelines set by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), an intelligence agency offshoot, risks being the subject of extensive surveillance that could result in kidnapping and detention in less formal jails or for varying periods of time in state prisons.

The watchdog also said that Pakistan’s top military intelligence organisation, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), is prepared to stifle any criticism.
