Okhla MLA for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Amanatullah Khan has been granted bail in a case concerning the alleged anomalies in the appointment of the Delhi Waqf Board during his reign as chairman.

AAP’s Amanatullah Khan was detained by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB), special judge Vikas Dhull granted bail on Wednesday and directed Khan to furnish a personal bail bond of Rs One lakh.

The court remanded Khan to judicial custody remand after the police custody remand on Monday.

While arguing on behalf of Amanatullah Khan, Senior Advocate Rahul Mehra stated that there is evidence to show that there wasn’t any violation of rules and regulations in appointing the contractual employees of the board since there are no such rules in place.

Additionally, Advocate Mehra stated that, although the board made all decisions together, Amanatullah Khan was singled out as the only defendant in this case.

Advocate Mehra also submitted that there is no rule that prohibits hiring people from a particular location or family if they are otherwise qualified. All the recruitments required a walk-in interview, and advertisements were also published in newspapers, added Mehra.

The counsel for Amanatullah Khan stated that there is no evidence that shows if any illegal money was recovered from the defendant. Hence, the sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act are not applicable.

Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Atul Shrivastava said while opposing the bail plea, that there is proof against the accused, Amanatullah Khan is an influential individual, and he may influence the witnesses in this case.

APP Atul Shrivastava submitted that the funds of Rs. 3.2cr were meant to help widows but rather the funds were paid as salaries of those employees, hence, there was misappropriation of funds.

According to the ACB’s statement to the press, the investigation involves financial embezzlement and anomalies in the operation of the Delhi Waqf Board. Amanatullah Khan allegedly illegally recruited 32 people while serving as chairman, therefore breaking all government standards and procedures.
