Juno meets Jupiter!

Well what dya know? Today, the US space agency successfully put a new probe in orbit around Jupiter.

That probe is called the Juno satellite, which left Earth five years ago and has achieved the rather tricky task of entering Jupiter's atmosphere by firing a rocket engine to slow its approach to the planet and get caught by its gravity. Juno has sent back a sequence of tones that let us Earth dwellers (or more specifically Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California) know that the manoeuvre has gone as planned.

"All stations on Juno co-ord, we have the tone for burn cut-off on Delta B," Juno Mission Control had announced. "Roger Juno, welcome to Jupiter."

Mind = blown. In a good way!

Scientists plan to use the spacecraft to sense the planet's deep interior. They think the structure and the chemistry of its insides hold clues to how this giant world formed some four-and-a-half-billion years ago. Here's an artists depiction of it all going on...

And of course here is our PERFECT ALIGNMENT which has Jupiter, the biggest planet, as it's central player- formed of vintage cabochons dating from the 1940s through to the 1980s, originally made in Italy, Austria and Germany. Each selected for their similarities to the planets, they're all here: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Jupiter has orange, yellow and red swirls of patterns, mimicking the gaseous structure and it beautiful marbled look.

It's all about you today big guy!
