2024 Thoughts

I think 2024 is going to be the year that people, who want to be active online, are going to finally learn to post their content first on a platform that they fully control. I think the Internet is going to go back to the way it was in the early 2000’s. Or so I hope.

Many people are going to start their own personal sites/blogs and have them federate with social media. WordPress, which powers 40%+ of the websites integrates with Activitypub, so that will make it easier for people.

Threads Isn’t A Bad Thing

I think that with Meta/Instagram’s Threads federating with the greater ActivityPub community, this will be a good thing. People can choose where they want to distribute and how it’s accessed.

As much as I bemoan the loss of Twitter to Elon Musk. I think more people are going to be using Threads this year and that will be just fine. They will have the community that they want, with an Algorithm that helps them feel connected and on top of things. And those of us who want more control will be on other ActivityPub platforms (ie. Mastodon, PixelFed, etc.).

The Algorithm Is Going To Stick Around

The Algorithm isn’t going anywhere. Threads.net has a pretty strong algorithm, whereas Mastodon (et. al) has none. I think having the option to have an algorithm to show missed and interesting posts is important but it shouldn’t be as heavy handed as it is on Facebook proper.

I’m excited to see where the Internet goes this year.

Time to buckle up and get going!

Happy New Year, everyone!
