Masan High-Tech Materials Introduces Tungsten Powders for 3D Printing and Battery Technology

  • Masan High-Tech Materials has made new strides by developing globally trademarked Tungsten powders for 3D printing and battery technology.
  • Masan High-Tech Materials addresses modern 3D printing and battery technology with internationally registered trademarks.
  • Masan High-Tech Materials, a subsidiary of Masan Group, has announced new advancements in 3D printing technology through the development of globally patented Tungsten powder products.

Under the trade name “starck2print®,” H.C. Starck Tungsten Powders (H.C. Starck), a subsidiary of Masan High-Tech Materials Corporation, now provides special tungsten powders and related innovation services for additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing.

The powders are especially well suited for additive manufacturing processes like powder bed-based laser beam melting (LPBF) or selective electron beam due to their high flowability and optimized particle size distribution.

In addition to offering to create custom blends for each customer’s unique needs within the framework of application technology cooperation, H.C. Starck also makes existing products available.

Sustainability through recycling and efficiency in 3D printing applications

The “starck2print®” powders made by H.C. Starck are created by reducing tungsten oxide in a hydrogen environment. Due to the products’ constant high purity, this particularly effective process helps to ensure stable production quality at customers’ facilities.

The more than a 100-year-old company can also create a closed loop in which the tungsten components are recovered from used 3D prints and used again as raw materials thanks to its extensive recycling expertise.

According to Mr. Hady Seyeda, CEO of H.C. Starck, “We think that the metal tungsten technology has significant potential in 3D printing. Creating our own brand demonstrates our abilities and goals in this dynamic, expanding industry.

Innovation and differentiation in the fast-growing battery industry

Under the “starck2charge®” product brand, H.C. Starck continued to sell specialized tungsten powders for use in lithium-ion batteries as of the end of February 2023. CEO Hady Seyeda claims that products containing tungsten can significantly advance battery technology. We are interacting with new target groups in this highly innovative field in addition to creating new products. The starck2charge brand highlights our continued dedication to this industry and makes it simpler for us to stand out from the competition.

The business has recently made significant strides in the lithium-ion battery industry, which is growing. For instance, in July 2022, it bought a 15% stake in the British startup Nyobolt, which plans to soon introduce a tungsten-based anode technology for ultra-fast-charging batteries. Nyobolt, a product of Cambridge University research, recently made it onto the Financial Times “Tech Champions 2022” shortlist.

H.C. Starck Tungsten has been investigating novel cathode coatings concurrently since April of last year with the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research (ZSW) in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Existing powder mixtures have been shown to improve the stability and safety of lithium-ion batteries when used in the appropriate applications.

Masan High-Tech Materials’ CEO, Mr. Craig Bradshaw, stated, “Our goal is to produce innovative advanced materials with distinctive applications and release them on the market soon. The addition of “starck2print®” and “starck2charge®” to our product line is part of our ongoing effort to better serve the requirements of advanced technology companies and international industries.
