SBA chief tackles tough questions during Salem visit

SALEM — U.S. Small Business Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet paid a visit to a hub of small business activity on the North Shore Wednesday when she and Salem Congressman Seth Moulton held a roundtable discussion with business leaders at Salem State's Enterprise Center.
"It's a great honor to have the SBA administrator in our District," noted Moulton, a Democrat, who sits on the House Committee on Small Business. The committee provides congressional oversight for the SBA, an independent government agency designed to protect the interests of small businesses.
Contreras-Sweet is a member of President Obama's cabinet and an entrepreneur responsible for starting three businesses herself. She moved to California from Mexico as a young girl, and was California's longest serving business, transportation and housing secretary for five years.
Moulton, who has placed an emphasis on economic development and reviving the fortunes of Lynn, where he toured with Contreras-Sweet earlier in the day, said the 6th District is all about small businesses.
"This is a district of small town characters and people like yourself who start businesses," he said.

The freshman congressman also noted the growth of Salem State University and the expansion of the campus at a former Sylvania plant under President Patricia Meservey, who sat with Moulton and the cabinet secretary on Wednesday.
