North Shore CC plays ‘important role’ for people

Matt Adams, admissions recruiter for North Shore Community College, joined Boston Herald Radio yesterday to talk about an upcoming open house event on Saturday in Danvers from 10 a.m. to noon.

Q: What’s your pitch to people about North Shore Community College?

A: Well, you know, community colleges play an important role for the residents within the North Shore, but also throughout the greater commonwealth of Massachusetts. … We’ll see students that will be usually coming to start their education for the first two years at North Shore and then transfer to a four-year institution through our MassTransfer program in the Commonwealth Commitment (Initiative) — you’re usually saving a lot of money coming out of high school. And other students we’ll see leaning toward coming back to school to start a new career path. But the bottom line is, most of the students are looking to advance that academic and career resume, so North Shore is a great spot for that.

Q: Tell us what to expect at the open house.

A: We feature some academic programs and the Student Services Fair. We have a tour of campus and some neat hotspot sessions, which are basically information sessions and resource sessions for navigating the transfer program, how to afford college, our S.T.E.M. — Science Technology Engineering and Math — so students can get an idea of what’s going on on campus and find the right kind of program for them.

Q: When are campus visits?

A: If they’re looking to visit campus for more information, we offer information sessions on
Mondays and Wednesdays — Wednesdays are in Lynn and Mondays are in Danvers at 4 p.m.

Q: Can people take classes this summer?

A: If you’re interested in taking summer courses, we still have another summer session on July 5 through Aug. 15. … I usually recommend that, especially for high school students coming out to take another
summer course before they’ve gone off to college.

Q: How do you distinguish yourselves from other colleges and universities?

A: Well, I really think it’s the faculty and staff and the administration here at North Shore. They really do a great job of being engaged with the students and trying to work to basically help them to achieve their academic and career goals going forward. So, it’s kind of a family environment. And I think it’s very welcoming. When you come on into any of our campuses, you’ll get that feeling.
