HEAD OF THE CLASS: Ipswich's Hedderman chosen as 54th Salem News Student-Athlete Award winner

SALEM — A demanding workload of Honors and Advanced Placement classes never steered Ipswich’s Michaela Hedderman away from excelling athletically for the Tigers.
Hedderman, who captivated the room during the judging portion of the event, was named the 54th winner of the Salem News Student-Athlete Award at the annual banquet at Rockafellas in Salem last night. It’s the first time since 1999 that a student from Ipswich took home the award.
“I was not expecting this, I really wasn’t,” said Hedderman. “I’m shaking and am in shock right now. I’ve never been this speechless to be honest.”
The 18-year-old’s talents go far beyond the classroom and track — she’s a fabulous musician, photographer and artist. Her desire to be great has driven her to become a Division 1 track recruit. Hedderman, who is ranked in the fourth decile in her class, is headed to the University of South Florida in the fall.
“Michaela’s interest in art, music really typified the kind of well-rounded student- athlete award represents,” said Assistant Sports Editor Matt Williams, one of four student-athlete judges. “Her desire to improve herself even when she’s breaking school records, is admirable.”
