SALEM — The House of the Seven Gables reached a milestone Wednesday morning in its ongoing restoration work.
Workers hoisted a Steel reinforcement beam through a window in the Gables' second-floor "secret room" — a part of the historic house that the public has not yet been able to access. The steel, created specifically for the Gables, will support the house's original summer beam, allowing the room to accommodate public tours.

The secret room, which will showcase a specific historic era once complete, will be open to the public in time for The Gables' 350th birthday in 2018. Proceeds from tours will go toward the nonprofit House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association's work in Salem and elsewhere on the North Shore.
