Barbarians

Barbarians stormed the city gates,
for a foolish cause they fought
and death and suffering they brought.
The kingdom was left in dire straits

Sticks and stones broke sword and shield,
a king brought to his knees by a savage.
The countries treasures they did ravage,
in the end the king was forced to yield.

Now higher at the table they merrily ate,
while  peasants toil away in the slums.
Living of drops of water and bread crumbs,
all because there was no power in the state.

Never trust those in power to uphold your rights- A Vigilant Shrub
