Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

Now yes, sounds a little harsh right? At first glance you might think that this is some sort of weird horror retelling of the Wizard of Oz. Well, you were right about one thing; this story is in fact a retelling, but not of the scary/thriller type.

Dorothy Must Die follows the point of view of Amy Gumm, the other girl from Kansas. Her living situation is terrible and her mother is the party-drinker type. Then one day she is swept up into a tornado, taking her trailer home along with it. She lands in Oz, yes Oz, the fairy tale land of happiness and rainbows. Now, take out the fairy tale, happiness and rainbow part.

Oz is completely different than the story Amy had read in her childhood. Imagine this : a gray, colorless sky over a wasteland of dead plant life and, from the looks of it, no life at all. They say Dorothy found away to come back to Oz. Princess Ozma crowned Dorothy ruler of the land. They say she seized power and by power I mean magic. Dorothy is no longer the sweet, joyful character we all loved. Dorothy is mean and cruel, who will destroy anything that may threaten her.

Soon after Amy lands in Oz, she is recruited by The Revolutionary Order of The Wicked, and learns that Wicked witches may just be the good guys, and Good witches may just be the villains. Amy must take down Dorothy and bring back the magical Oz we all read and loved. Can she do it?

I loved this book. The whole idea of it was very original and the plot was incredibly fascinating. I could not put this book down. The story line was really detailed; it felt like I was there! Most might think the idea of it sounds frightening, however I didn’t think it was and I urge absolutely everyone to pick this one up. It is the first in a series, the next one comes out sometime in 2015. (Title: The Wicked Will Rise).

I cannot wait to read it, given that DMD ends with a cliffhanger and so much is yet to take place!

Rating: 4/5 stars
