Sonny is a compulsive liar. She lies to her best friend, to her classmates and everyone else. When her life goes down hill she tells her best friend, Amy, that she got kicked out and soon finds herself living with her. But then one night she starts messaging her nemesis, Ryder Cross, ad it turns out that he's not as bad as she thinks he is...too bad he thinks she's Amy.
I read The Duff ages ago and really liked it because of the high school film feel to it, so I was expecting Lying Out Loud to be the same. And it was for the most part, but there were a few moments that I found quite emotional, particularly when Sonny was dealing with her family issues, which actually got quite intense.
I loved the relationship between Sonny and Ryder, even if Ryder didn't know it was actually with Sonny. Their instant messaging and texting was very on point for teenage relationships. Sonny's lying did impact their relationship in a big way and the complications it brought worked for the plot, even if they had me cringing at times!
I liked the way that the characters were all nuanced. They weren't just stereotypes, there was always something about them that broke the mold. On top of that none of the characters were the super popular or super not type, they were in the middle (well Ryder just annoyed everyone) which made them more relatable as students.
There was also a big focus on Amy and Sonny's relationship, which was good I think. They reminded me a bit of me and my best friend (except that we don't lie to each other at all!) but the finding their proper groove with each other. I loved that the focus was on their friendship more than anything else.
This was a good read, entertaining but emotional at times.
