Jane Downing has always felt as if she melted into the background and no one could remember her. But even as a bluestocking, a woman of learning, she wants to experience one night of passion and her sights are set on Captain Xavier Grey. Xavier doesn't believe he is worthy of love after his part of the war, but Jane's determination to seduce him begins to break down his walls...

Ridley writes a feel good Regency Romance. You know what you're getting with these books and you're entertained while reading it. I like the inevitability of an easy romance like this at times, it makes The Dukes of War books a lighter read for in between heavier going books.

I loved the interactions between Xavier and Jane. Though at first they were only acquaintances, they truly became friends over the course of the book. It was the little details that really brought  them together, and it made them feel like real people.

Xavier really brought to the front of the story that war isn't honorable or heroic, but I also thought that he brought to the front the fact that forgiveness is key to moving on. Changing seemed to be a theme for both characters and it worked for progressing the relationship.

There was a lot of chemistry between the two leads, though they didn't act on it much because of Xavier's honour and the idea that to do so would ruin Jane's reputation (besides the fact she wanted to be ruined). I really enjoyed Xavier's attempts to 'cool off', especially when he took the cat out on a cat leash!

You don't have to have read the previous books to understand The Captain's Bluestocking Mistress, but this is a fun and light going series so is definitely worth a read.
