Having read The Fix Up earlier this week, I was excited to dive into The Hang Up, and it didn't disappoint. I really needed a light and fun read after finishing Wool (Hugh Howey) last night, and this delivered perfectly, and was a perfect Sunday afternoon read.
There was real chemistry between Miriam and Jason, and the two of them brought out parts of their personalities that they thought had gone. In Miriam's case, Jason made her more adventourous then she had been since her father died, and it felt good having a Character truly become themselves again.
I also loved the family element in The Hang Up. Jason's nephew, Henry, was so cute! I liked that Jason's sister was still in the picture and was a good mother, Jason wasn't compensating on that front and was over protective towards them both! In fact it was just because of Henry's past illness that he was so protective, which definitely made sense in the grand scheme of things.
I thought that Fenske absolutely nailed writing a 5 year old character. He was that perfect combination of brash and childlike. He'd say things that could make the adult characters feel uncomfortable, but at the same time he was obsessed with dinosaurs!
The Hang Up is a stand alone story, but it does mention events that happened in The Fix Up, and timeline wise the two books run on from one another. You wouldn't be ruining The Fix Up by reading The Hang Up first though as both books are the guaranteed sweet HEA type books anyway!
I've loved reading the First Impressions books so far and look forward to reading more from Fenske in the future!
