Having woken up from her Morph, Junco finds herself getting used to the Avian way of life; from having wings to participating in the General Fledge. But with the man who helped her escape from Earth on trial for treason, Junco has to make new friends, including her teamates on Aves Team 039 and the members of her Fledge. The Avian culture is even more bloodthursty than the one Junco came from and she has to learn to survive.
So I know I said I was done with my JA Huss binge but it turns out I'm not. Nor do I now want to be. Having finished Fledge I've been itching to start on Flight since I got home (but am showing considerable restraint and reading some Netgalley books first). I'm actually quite surprised I feel this way, as the first I Am Just Junco book took a bit of getting into for me, whereas this one had me completely enthralled.
Junco's love life took a lot of sorting though! I'm a very set person when it comes to book couples. As soon as I have a pairing I like I stick to them and don't want anything to mess them up, which goes for Junco too! I liked that she had the interest of more than one character, but it turned out the way that I wanted it to...though I realise there are still 4 more books to go before I can completely say this.
There was a lot of action in the book, and a lot of Junco trying to figure out who she is. I liked that killing wasn't all that straight forward for her, even if she has been doing it since before she can remember. It makes her a more human character (or more part-human, part-Avian character) and that she is more than just the Warrior that people see her as.
There were a lot of new characters introduced, and a couple of them met fates that surprised me given Junco's relationships with them, but everything fit and felt like it was the right thing for the right person. At times the events got messy for some characters but that definitely worked for me and gave them all another dimension.
The sci-fi elements were strong in this one, especially considering that all the characters belong to an alien race to a certain extent, so I would say that it isn't a gurantee you'll enjoy the book if you're not already a sci-fi fan. However there's no battles between space ships or things like that.
I loved Fledge, and I'm glad I did, especially because I've ended up loving it more than I thought I would!
