Living a pampered life in Evanescence, the biggest problem that Ella faces is not fitting in because she's a Natural, and not Modified or Custom made like other Aristocrats. With her elevation to Elite status after her father's game, Nexis, is a success, Ella's life has to fall in line with the rest of the citizens; until a tragic accident leads to the death of her father and the loss of her legs. Now trapped in her father's workroom, Ella enters the game she's avoided and meets Gus and his fellow Tricksters. Gus is unlike any guy she's ever met and she soon finds herself falling for him.
I'm not too sure where to start with this review, there seems to be a lot to say but I'm not sure what to start with. I couldn't put Nexis down, I was constantly wondering what was going to happen next and how to unravel everything that was going on.
I loved the game within the story. It gave Ella a way to escape, as it would anyone else, but also allowed her to grow relationships. Working out who could be who was a big part of the enjoyment for me (see paragraph below which does kind of contain spoilers for more on part of that!). The game element also meant that there could be plenty of action, RPG style, while still maintaining the sci-fi feel of the future.
WARNING; the following paragraph could be seen as a spoiler about the ending. I will omit names and to keep it as spoiler free as possible though. So one of the big mysteries throughout the book was the "real" identity of Gus, and I spent a good portion of the novel trying to work it out (and failing because I kept changing my mind) but by the end of the book I still didn't know. There is a strong case for two different characters (this is in Ella's mind too) but it's never outright stated which one actually is the real Gus. I mean it's ensured that I'm desperate to read the next book, and this is one of the rare cases where I don't actually think it detracted from my enjoyment in the slightest (sometimes open endings frustrate me!)

The dystopia was good, based mostly on technology and the idea of plastic surgery (Modifications & Alterations) becoming common place. It also allowed Ella to be automatically different because she was a "Natural" rather than a "Custom" (think genetically engineered baby for the latter). The society was well thought out, as were the hints of the back story to how Earth became what it is in the book.
I did really enjoy Nexis, and I definitely want to read more in the series!
