When Josie escaped from her desk job at the Agency she wanted nothing more to do with that kind of life. Living in a small apartment above the bar she now works in the most danger she expects is from looking the other way about what her lover does for a living and keeping him at a distance. Despite herself, Josie begins to fall for Johnny but when she finds out that he's involved in an international drug trafficking deal she is torn by which direction she wants to go in and what the right one is.
I had a real love-hate relationship with this book. There were times when I enjoyed it a lot and that was especially around the suspense elements, and there were times that I found it quite frustrating; mainly when Josie's conscience took the reigns.
My main issue was the big twist. Now I'm all for big twists but I like to be taken by surprise. I can't remember exactly when I figured out the big twist but it was really early in the book, there were just things that clearly didn't work without the twist being the case. There was the odd little bit of it that did take me by surprise though.
Josie thought a lot about what she was doing and whether she should be betraying Johnny to Agent Peter Shand, or sticking by Johnny and her emotions. At first I thought it was good that she wasn't finding it easy to choose, but eventually I thought it did get a little too much, especially when the suspense was interupted by her conscience.
The relationship between Josie and Johnny was strong, there was chemistry and passion as well as moments of sweetness between them. Despite knowing what Johnny did for a living Josie began to care for him and that part of the story worked well and was engaging.
I enjoyed In the Dark, even if I did find it a tad frustrating at times!
