With the secret to turning Epics good, David and his team, including reformed Epic Megan, go on the hunt for their old team leader, Prof. While most of the team thhink they'll have to kill Prof, David is determined that he can turn Prof back to their side, but now that Calamity has David in his sights it could be more difficult...
Now where I thought that Firefight dropped it a little bit, Calamity picked it right back up. I didn't want to put this book down especially as it got closer to the end and to wrapping up the trilogy. The ending itself took me a little by surprise, I hadn't suspected anything like that would happen (except I heavily suspected David's specific revelation).
Calamity really expanded the world and the powers in it. Set in the third big city seen in David's universe, which was previously Atlanta, I once again encountered Sanderson's talent for creating something unique (all I'll say is that Atlantaa was renamed the city of salt in David's world). It worked really well, though I expected nothing less!
There was plenty of time given to the expansion of Epic powers in this book, mostly when it came to Megan and her power set. After her secondary character status in the previous book it was great to have her more on page. Particularly because her realism sometimes grounded David's idealism.
In fact Megan and David's relationship in general had really settled down. They'd basically decided they actually liked each other and so they settled into it. There wasn't a massive amount on page of their romance, but they were refering to each other as boyfriend/girlfriend and saying they loved each other. But even with this at the start of Calamity, their relationship was great to read and they bounced off each other well.
There were some great action scenes, and I loved how Sanderson managed to keep up the suspense in the book. I also liked the fact that actually he didn't introduce loads of new characters to the plot, and in fact managed to have less characters to focus on (partly because it was first person narrative from David so there were only the people around him that were seen). It worked really well and I loved every moment...not that I doubted I would!
