I will admit to just having an 'oh' moment while looking at the Goodreads page...I hadn't actually twigged the link between Ferran and Elinor (from A Reaper of Stone). I knew that Rend the Dark focused on a different character in the same universe, but that bit slipped me by! But honestly that just makes me think even more highly of the authors and how cleverly they have weaved together their series (I say this, but I have only read two of it so far!)
Somehow the authors have managed to create a compelling fantasy novella. As a reader you only see a small snippit of the character's world but in that there is a great amount of detail and it really helps to paint a picture. Before coming across An Echo of the Ascended I wouldn't have thought it was possible!
The characters do come fully formed due to the length of the book, however I liked that the prologue let the reader see a little but of Ferran's background, so that at least the lead character has a story. So while there is no active growing, it still works, without bogging down the prose with character development. Saying that I don't feel as if the characters were flat in any way, they worked well and I do look forward to learning more of them.
This was a great short read. It concentrates on the action and the world, and for a novella that works!
