Interview with Rita Lee Chapman

Tell us about your publishing journey…

Hi Nicky and thank you for inviting me to your blog.

It wasn’t until I retired that I finished my first Book, Missing in Egypt.  Until then my writing had been confined to business letters and reports or letters to my family back home.  Although I had started to write a couple of times (on a typewriter) I didn’t manager more than a few chapters.  I did keep them though and eventually incorporated them in to my books.  My submissions to publishers met with rejection but then I read about Amazon and made the decision to self-publish, one I have not regretted.
What do you love about being an author?

I love being in my own fantasy world, where anything can happen.  I’m more successful sitting at the computer and writing than trying to plot and so I never know where the story is going to take me.  It is also great fun being able to kill characters off or help them find romance.

If you could have dinner with any literary character, who would it be and
what would you eat?

My perfect dinner would be with Winston, from Winston – A Horse’s Tale.  Winston is a horse (of course) and I guess we would be eating his favourite – apples.

If your book was to be made into a movie, who would you cast as the leads?

Turning now to my crime mystery, Dangerous Associations, I would cast Nicole Kidman as Cathy,  as Geoffrey and Hugh Jackman as Rob.

Vampires – do you prefer them as sexy leads or blood hungry monsters?

I’m really not in to vampires (sorry, Nicky) but probably as sexy leads.

If you had a time machine, which era would you go back to and why?

Definitely the seventies – for the music, the excitement and the beautiful clothes.

What life advice do you wish you’d been given sooner?

Write a book!

If you were a supernatural creature, what would you be and why?

A Unicorn, because I love horses and I can live with the horn thing.

Where do you write best?

In my study, when it’s raining.

What was the last book you read, and what were your thoughts on it?

I’m on the last few pages of Wilbur Smith’s Monsoon.  It’s one of those books where you can’t read fast enough to find out what happens but at the same time you don’t want it to end.  I’m savouring the last few words and marveling at Wilbur Smith’s talent.

If you didn’t write in your genre, which other would you prefer and why?

I would like to write children’s books because I think it is so important to enjoy reading at a young age.  Losing yourself in a book and being transported to another place is pure magic and they can absorb and  learn so much without even realising it.

Winston – A Horse’s Tale

One for horse lovers!  Winston is a good-looking palomino horse whose life involves several different owners and many adventures.  As you read his story, told by Winston himself, you will appreciate horse ownership from the horse’s point of view.  Born on a country property in Australia, Winston tells of his breaking-in and education and the different people he encounters – good, bad and ignorant.  As well as his own story, Winston includes the experiences of other horses he meets along life’s way.
