We are pleased to announce that the Anne Brontë Society and Scarbo
rough Maritime Heritage Centre are collaborating on an Anne Brontë exhibition! The exhibition is titled The Final Days of Anne Brontë and will explore Anne’s final footsteps in Scarborough. Anne’s connection to Scarborough runs deeper than just being buried in the town, and we wanted to explore this in the exhibition. We follow Anne as she journeyed to Scarborough, her visit to the Baths, a stroll on the sands, her funeral, and finally, her burial at St. Mary’s Churchyard, Scarborough. However, we have also included other things about Anne’s life: her love of art, her talents, her time as a governess, her image and personality, and more. Anne spent a lot of time in Scarborough, more than just her final days, and we felt it was important to capture this. The Final Days of Anne Brontë aims to be a reflective exhibition about Anne’s life, looking at her achievements as an accomplished author and poet, and concluding with her final resting place.

We will have some unique editions of Anne’s books on display including an early Folio edition of Agnes Grey, and a reprinted early edition of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

Additionally, we have uncovered something interesting about Anne’s sketch of a woman looking out to see, so, come and look at our detective work… maybe you could even help us solve a mystery…

We also have facsimiles of Anne’s final letter to Ellen Nussey, and her unfinished drawings of her beloved dog, Flossy.

Please do come along to see the exhibition! We are very excited about it as it marks the starting point for many things yet to come!
