The Music Years: The Faces 1972

The Faces were an English rock band formed in 1969 by surviving members of the original Small Faces lineup when their lead singer Steve Marriott, left the band to form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton, 17-year-old drummer Jerry Shirley and bass player Greg Ridley.

My own love of the Faces came from the original Small Faces and has continued, but Steve Marriot on the other hand, along with Humble Pie, were never really my cup of tea.

When the Faces released ‘Stay with Me’ it was 1972 and I was 17 and working in a wine merchants. It was this single and Stewarts own ‘Maggie May’ released the previous year that drew me in. And who could avoid watching the flamboyant front man, Rod Stewart, who seemed to be everywhere and know everyone in the early 1970s.

My lifelong love of wine and the Faces music has endured the test of time as has Sir Rod Stewart who seems to be heading for an endearing life as an icon and a British treasure.
