Writing is creative process. But you also need a Framework to work within that allows you to be creative. What you need is a plan. But it’s not all about getting it right first time. Your writing process should be like learning to walk, small steps that build into a successful conclusion.
1. Get the words down first.
2. Chop and change the text.
3. Add more to it, give it a power, a life of its own.
4. Read it through, make it hang together – I usually repeat this part five times either on my own or with help if it’s a lot of text.
5. Proof read.
6. Edit.
7. Publish.
This is a simplistic approach, but it works for me whether I’m writing a 500 word piece for my blog or a novel, like The Brittle Sea which is currently 90,000 words long. This approach to writing gives you a process to apply to your writing. From where you write you first draft, your creative element of the framework, followed by your 2nd draft and so on and so forth.
I’ve found over the years that even though I’m mainly a pantser, writing by the seat of my pants, i.e., making it up as I go along, I still need a framework to work to.
Try it out, you may surprise yourself.
