The Brittle Sea: 2nd Draft Progress #1

If I were a Super-hero, I would say that I had an ability that I’ve never heard of in anyone else. maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t know of anyone who can both write a chapter in their mind and then break the chapter down into scenes and create the scenes in their mind. All this without writing anything down or putting onto a computer.

Is this something unique or can everybody do it?

How does this apply to me working on the 2nd draft of The Brittle Sea. Well, I can take the bare bones chapters and put ‘meat on the bone’ while I’m in the garden or taking a walk. Okay, it may not seem like a big deal and admittedly I can’t use my ability when driving or shopping, or anything else that requires concentration. But when my wife is watching a British soap like Coronation Street and I’m in the same room, waiting to turn over to something less dire, I can easily work out a chapter in 30 minutes.

What I do find hard is the actual writing, recording the information onto my computer. That takes an awful loot of concentration and in consequence a lot of time. Time is the big killer for any writer and lack of it means I don’t get to sit down and write in a pre-ordained time and place every day.

So the 2nd draft of The Brittle Sea is a slowly-slowly process or siga-siga as they say over here in Cyprus. You can’t rush it or you’ll end up missing something very vital. I learned that with my first novel, Operation Werwolf in which one of the characters changed names half-way through.

But I’m still determined to get the 2nd draft completed by the end of March, though it may well leak over in April.
