Yesterday was another day of walking. My poor old legs are a good few inches shorter than when I arrived in London on Sunday and it’s only Wednesday today. It’s was worth it though.
Part of my sightseeing yesterday was a trip on the London Eye. Impressive? You bet. Until you’ve seen London from the vantage point of the London Eye you don’t really appreciate many of the buildings you see from ground level. Looking up at the Houses of Parliament is impressive, looking down on the same building gives you a whole new perspective.
The queue for the Eye was pretty short and it only took about fifteen minutes before we were jumping aboard a pod. I say jumping, it was more like staggering aboard. The staff don’t stop the pod. You’re lined up like race horses several deep at a set of gates. Then they open the gates and urge you to rush forward and scramble into the pod as best you can. Unlike the London Underground there’s no need to ‘mind the gap’ as there isn’t one, so precisely engineered is the London Eye.
Then we’re on board, doors are shut and you can sit down and admire the view or do what our bunch of a dozen sightseers did and wander around the large pod, taking pictures and admiring the views.
The tour takes about 30 minutes and there was very little movement. I don’t like heights when looking over the edge of tall buildings, but this was somehow different and there was not a hint of vertigo.
All in all a really great experience. I’ll write a piece about my other tour earlier in the day, a visit to the Tower of London and all the gory and bloody details a Beefeater imparted to us.
