Living in Cyprus: Extract of Sheep

Those of you who know me will know I am somewhat follicly challenged on the old head. So much so all I have that grows up top is a beard and moustache, making me look something like an ageing Ming the Merciless from Flash Gordon.

The problem with this type of hairdo, or lack of, is that strong sunshine, if I’m not careful, can lead to dry skin. Never mind the implications of skin cancer.  Cyprus is, of course, famed for it long days of sunshine. We only get bad weather for 2-3 months of the year and so the rest of the time, especially in the high summer, it is hot with wall-to-wall sunshine.

So it was a lucky break on our recent trip to Australia that I discovered lanolin. Though I had heard of this substance, I had no idea how good it is for dry skin. Lanolin is a waxy substance secreted by the sebaceous glands of sheep. It’s secreted to help protect the skin and wool from extreme weather climates. Australia, as it happens, is full of sheep and while watching a display of how to shear sheep, the shearer happened to mention lanolin was good for human skin. So I bought a tub and hey-presto, my dried skin is dry no more.

There is however a downside. Lanolin stinks to high heaven. So either make sure your loved ones do actually love you before you smear it on in its raw state, or do what I did and buy a tub of lanolin cream with a few nice smelling additives.
