Adolf Hitler

Vastos Hugo had never experienced a headache like it before and never wanted to experience one like it again. He was awake, but his eyes were closed and he had no idea where he was. All was quiet. He sensed clean linen and suddenly realised he was in a bed. Not his own, for sure, the linen was coarse and his head rested on a hard pillow. A pillow? That was a novel experience as his last memory before blacking out was battling with Gideon… Gideon Prime!

Vastos Hugo struggled to sit up, then opened his eyes. Dappled sunlight filtered through a shaded window, the blinds half open. He was in a very sparse room. Some sort of hospital he surmised. There was a small wooden cabinet next to his bed with a pitcher of water and a half filled glass of water. There was a door and that was it, apart from the bed he was in. The door opened and a vision of loveliness walked in. Her full length uniform and crisp white hat spoke volumes. Hugo recognised a nurse when he saw one, though the garb seemed somehow out of time. It seemed familiar in a distant sort of way.

“Wie fühlst du dich körperlich? Gut?”

Hugo sat bolt upright. He didn’t recognise the language, didn’t know any of the words and yet somehow, he did.

“Ja, danke,” Hugo replied, not knowing how or why he knew this language. He understood it and could speak it, but in his head, it was English, earth standard, the same earth English his father had taught him, much to his mother’s disgust.

The young nurse, her beautiful blond braided hair glimmering in the sunlight, placed a small tray with a tumbler of liquid on it on the bedside table. She sat on the corner of the bed and took Hugo’s wrist and checked his pulse.

“Gut. Möchten Sie etwas zu essen?”

Do I want anything to eat? Hugo smiled at the nurse. “Ja, bitte.” Yes please. “Wo bin ich? Welches Jahr haben wir?” Where am I? What year is it?

The young nurse frowned. “Sie sind im Krankenhaus, Beelitz. Wir schreiben das Jahr 1916.” 1916! By all the gods of war. “Wer bin ich?” Who am I?

He admitted to himself it was an odd question, because he knew who he was, and yet he didn’t quite feel himself. Vastos Hugo felt somehow out of body. The nurse stood up and went to the door, a look of concern on her face.

She thinks I’m mad.

Opening the door, the nurse stopped a passing orderly and quickly said something to him. Shooing the orderly away she re-entered the room and shut the door. The young nurse sat down again on the edge of Hugo’s bed and took his hands in hers.

“Sie hatten einen Schlag auf den Kopf. Erinnerst du dich?” You have had a blow to the head. Do you remember?

Hugo shook his head and played to his audience, giving the nurse a pleading stare. “Wer bin Ich?” Who am I?

The nurse smiled, sadly. ‘Sie sind körperlich Adolf Hitler,” she said and patted Hugo’s hand gently.

Vastos Hugo looked at her in amazement followed by a realisation that he was on earth in the old nation state of Germany. He knew enough of earth history from his father to realise where he was. A small, but quickly widening smile crept across his face and Vastos Hugo began to laugh. Somehow, in some amazing way, the alien device had transported him in time and now, the world was suddenly Vastos Hugo’s oyster, and he could build an empire.
