As far as I know, trees are alive but not sentient. But then, who can tell what sort of intelligence a lemon Tree could possibly have. That being the case, how is it possible for a lemon tree to have a personality crisis.
Our one and only lemon tree, a birthday gift from my wife a few years back, started fruiting three years ago. It managed one lemon! Last year it was about eight lemons. This year, though not a bumper year, it’s got eleven lemons on it… and two oranges.
I hear the clinking of keys as the men in white coats get my padded cell ready for my enforced stay.
Well, sorry to disappoint you, but lemon trees bearing oranges is in fact not at all unusual. Stay with me on this, my explanation will be quite fruitful for those wanting to grow citrus trees.
It’s apparently well know for growers of citrus trees to splice orange trees on lemon trees and vice versa. I don’t know why as neither require each other to encourage pollination, unlike some apple trees. So it appears what we have is a lemon tree, with a bit of orange tree spliced to it, which should be interesting when we come to taste the oranges. Odd, I know, but different in a quirky Mediterrannean sort of way.
Yes indeed, further proof if any was needed to expect the unexpected when Living in Cyprus.
