Summary: Ho’oponopono: The Hawaiian Forgiveness Ritual as the Key to Your Life's Fulfillment by Ulrich E. Duprée

The Ho’oponopono is Hawaiian. And it built on the understanding that we live in an abundant universe. It’s a forgiveness ritual, and it’s about forgiving yourself and others. God wants us to enjoy abundance and perfection. We block these things because we’re holding on to things that don’t matter. To receive we must let something go.

The meditative prayer allows you to let go of victimhood. You cannot control what others do. However, you can control your response. Use the Ho’oponopono meditation to clear blockage and be proactive. You have the power to change your life. Take responsibility for everything that happens in your life. And move from reaction to action.

4-Step Process of Ho’oponopono

  1. “We ask to reach a place of recognition, courage, power, intelligence and peace.

  2. We describe the problem and then search our heart for our share in it. This share may, for example, be a judgment we have made, or a specific action, or a memory that requires healing.

  3. We forgive unconditionally and speak the four magic sentences: I am sorry. Please forgive me. I love you. Thank you.

  4. We give thanks, express trust and let go.”

This simple process helps you to resolve challenges and conflicts. When you resolve issues, things flow. It’s a purification of the soul and mind. Consider it the purification of memories. Problems are learning opportunities.

“Sicknesses are seen as symptoms of inner conflict, and the energetic tensions are released through a shamanistic Ho’oponopono ritual. When the soul is healed, the body follows.”

2 Ho’oponopono Systems

  1. Ho'oponopono is a method of purification that removes inner blocks and programs that impede life and the flow of the universe's gifts.
  2. Ho’oponopono as a family conference. It’s traditionally practiced in Hawaii and applied in youth and social work.

Steps to Ensure the Ho’oponopono System is Successful

  1. “To join with the Original Source (Akua), the Being of Light and the Ancestors.
  2. To contemplate and accept the problem (Hala, Hihia).
  3. To take on 100% responsibility for the existence of the problem in your life.
  4. To be ready, following forgiveness, to handle things differently.
  5. To mutually pardon and forgive (Mihi)
  6. To give thanks and offer the closing prayer (Pule Ho’opau).”

Case Study by Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len in the Psychiatric Department of the State Prison of Kaneohe on Hawaii

To understand the power of Ho'oponopono Ulrich E. Duprée uses a case study and writes about the process and the results. Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len didn’t work on the prisoners. Instead, he worked on cleansing his heart and consciousness. After 18 months of doing this, there was a change in the mood in prison.

“Forgiveness releases us. It frees us from a burden that either we cannot carry or do not want to carry. Who would want to live their life with a big backpack on their shoulders, full of problems, old conflicts and fears?”

When you forgive, you make life easier. You experience what you send out to the world.

4 Magic Sentence of Ho’oponopono

I am sorry.

Please forgive me.

I love you.

Thank you.

What the 4 Sentence Mean

I am sorry:

Apologize. Recognize there’s a problem and stop suppressing it. See it as a learning opportunity. Connect to a higher source. You have caused harm, and it’s time to release the guilt by apologizing.

Please forgive me:

You’re seeking forgiveness for you and your ancestors who may have caused harm consciously or unconsciously.

I love you:

Declare love for yourself and those you’ve harmed. Love and accept yourself and others for who you are. See the divine in the other person.

Thank you:

The miracle is already on its way. Give thanks to God and the angels for the transformation. Forgiveness frees you energetically from the chains of the past.

Law of Cause and Effect

We’re where we are in life because of the choices we’ve made. Our thoughts, deeds, and actions have an effect. Everything is connected. Our consciousness is part of a bigger consciousness, the World Soul.

Vibration

There’s no standing still. Everything vibrates. Think of the Universe as a symphony. Harmony and sincere sympathy lead to health and unity.

The World is What We Believe It to Be

“From a Buddhist point of view, every situation, event and object is essentially empty. Everything gains meaning by our contemplating it. Among the Huna this translates as ‘the world is what we think it is’. Our world is subjective.”

We create our future which is based on our thoughts and words. Monitor your thoughts. In the Silva basic course, I mentioned to the teacher I wanted to learn how to get more clients. He pointed out the language I was using. When I say get, it sounds desperate. The instructor advised me to change the words I was using from ‘get’ to ‘attract’.

What he said made me think. I realized my results were related to the words I chose. I started paying closer attention to my word choices. Loving kindness raises your vibration.

From Separation to Unity

Don’t make the mistake of falling in love with your problems. Think of everything as being relative.

“Judgments and appreciations lead to separation. Acceptance and forgiveness lead back to unity. Separation leads to disharmony, isolation, fear, arrogance, and sickness. Harmony and agreement, on the other hand, lead to joy, happiness, inner riches (and if one so wishes, outer riches follow) and health.”

Other Thoughts

Think of yourself as part of the world. When you change, you change the world. Ask yourself the four questions.

  1. Who has the problem?
  2. Who is the problem?
  3. Who has the power?
  4. Who has the responsibility?

Use the Ho'oponopono for each question. Ask how you can be part of the solution. Focus on the solution and not the problem.
