List of Skills and Abilities: 12 Months to Master Key Skills in the Workplace Like a Rockstar

Initial Thoughts on List of Skills and Abilities: 12 Months to Master Key Skills in the Workplace Like a Rockstar

Difficult things are easier to do when you have a process in place. And that is the same when it comes to learning the list of skills and abilities professionals need to succeed in the workplace. I am not always on top of my game, and I will never pretend that I am. I fall off the wagon just like any other person. But it is easier for me to get back on track when I have a good system in place.

For about six months I went through a tough time. There were times during that difficult period when I read what I felt like reading. But for one month, I read over 30 books related to this reading challenge. I know which type of books I needed to read and I worked my way through them. When you break down activities into bite-sized pieces you will find that you are less daunted. Find a system that works well for you.

For example, if I recommend that you read 60 books in a year while taking part in the Strategic Reading Challenge, you may start to hyperventilate because the number of books overwhelms you. If I recommend that you read five books each month, that may sound more reasonable to you. If I recommend that you read for one hour each day, that is even better. However, if I recommend that you read during the breaks you have during a day – between meetings, waiting for your flight, waiting at the doctor’s office, waiting for your child’s soccer game to start, during your commute – you would nod your head and say, “I can definitely do that.” It is about how you frame things, and you know that the time you spend waiting each day is often more than an hour.

Furthermore, when you have a powerful purpose for doing something, you make time for it. Is mastering a list of professional skills to help you thrive in the future, a good enough reason to invest the time to read some of the best personal development books?

Let us get started on Month Six of the Strategic Reading Challenge. This month the focus is on creativity and learning about ideas. Because I was born in Jamaica, I did not read many of the popular children’s as a child. However, I had a lot of fun reading them as an adult. Reading children’s books take you back to a place where you believed you could do anything. Make sure that you have all your five books handy so you can read your books one after another. It is also a good practice not to read difficult books one after another because that is too draining. Before you buy any of the books, check to see what you already own. You may be surprised by what you discover.
