Angela’s KU- February 2018 Reads and What’s Up Next

FYI:

R Lee Smith has put her entire backlist into KU. If she’s been on your radar, but you have been hesitant to one-click, now might be the time to try her out.

I recommend:

The Last Hour of Gann– AMZ

It was her last chance:

Amber Bierce had nothing left except her sister and two tickets on Earth’s first colony-ship. She entered her Sleeper with a five-year contract and the promise of a better life, but awakened in wreckage on an unknown world. For the survivors, there is no rescue, no way home and no hope until they are found by Meoraq—a holy warrior more deadly than any hungering beast on this hostile new world…but whose eyes show a different sort of hunger when he looks at her.

It was his last year of freedom:

Uyane Meoraq is a Sword of Sheul, God’s own instrument of judgment, victor of hundreds of trials, with a conqueror’s rights over all men. Or at least he was until his father’s death. Now, without divine intervention, he will be forced to assume stewardship over House Uyane and lose the life he has always known. At the legendary temple of Xi’Matezh, Meoraq hopes to find the deliverance he seeks, but the humans he encounters on his pilgrimage may prove too great a test even for him…especially the one called Amber, behind whose monstrous appearance burns a woman’s heart unlike any he has ever known.

From R. Lee Smith, author of Heat and Cottonwood, comes an epic new story of desire, darkness and the dawn that comes after The Last Hour of Gann.

WARNING: This Book contains graphic violence, strong sexual content and explicit language. It is intended for mature readers only.

Land of the Beautiful Dead– AMZ

SHE WOULD DARE ANYTHING TO SAVE THE WORLD FROM HIS RULE.

EVEN HIS BED.

He ascended from the darkness years ago—Azrael the Eternal, Azrael the Undying, Azrael Who Is Death—bringing with him the black rains, the fires, the souring of the sky, and the Eaters. Now he rules in the walled city of Haven with his favored Children and his dead court, while all that is left of the living struggles to survive in the ruins of a world that used to be their own. But even as extinction looms, humanity will never surrender to their monstrous conqueror.

For Lan, this brutal life has been the only one she’s ever known, but she still believes it can change. If the war can never truly end until the Eaters are ended, she will go to Haven, to Azrael himself, and demand he end them. To her surprise, she does not immediately die the hero’s death she expected. Instead, Azrael offers her a chance to convince him, and all she has to do is submit herself to the chill embrace of the lord of the Land of the Beautiful Dead.

From the author of The Scholomance and The Last Hour of Gann comes a new vision of erotic horror! This book contains explicit sex and gore and is intended for mature readers only.

WHAT I READ THIS MONTH:

Dad Bod by Lily Kate – AMZ

I’m a single mom.
He’s a single dad.
In theory, we should have something in common, right? Wrong.

When I receive a phone call from my daughter’s school, I’m shocked to find my sweet little girl has been in a fight. Hauled to the principal’s office to straighten things out, I find myself sitting next to none other than my first kiss—Tyler Daniels—the man who’d taught me the meaning of trouble.

After living the high life in NYC, Tyler’s back in town to ruin me all over again. This time—the joke’s on him. I’m older and (sometimes) wiser, and after my last failed relationship, I’m in no mood to have my pigtails pulled. Not even when Tyler decides to try that kissing thing all over again.

However, Tyler’s gotten a lot better at that kissing thing, and when one steamy kiss leads to the next, I suddenly find myself thinking about Tyler Daniels and his smoking hot dad bod at the worst of times. Even if his presence in my home town will run my beautiful little inn right out of business.

When push comes to shove, however, Tyler Daniels and I are not cut out to be friends—and I’m not sure we’re ready for more.

I went into this thinking it was a romantic comedy, but it’s really not. It’s more like a regular old second chance contemporary romance with a few fun moments. I was a little disappointed. The romance is okay, the characters are okay. I would say this is a 3 star read that has touches of sweet and a few sexy scenes.

THE VERDICT: Good for a quick afternoon read, but it won’t end up on a favorite shelf.

The Pilot and the Puck-Up by Pippa Grant – AMZ

He’s the biggest, baddest, most spider-fearing motherpucker on the ice…

When you’re named after the king of the gods, the world expects certain things of you.

Tough? Damn right.

Smart? Don’t let the hockey uniform fool you.

Large and in charge? Honey, I’m the biggest, baddest, mother pucking-est machine to ever own the ice. I shoot. I score. In and out of the rink. I don’t come early, but I come often, if you know what I mean. And I always leave the ladies wanting more.

Until that chick last night.

I’m no one-thrust wonder, and you’re damn right I’m going to prove to her I can do better. But every time I think I’m finally on my way back into her pants, she one-ups and out-balls me.

I should cut my losses, lick my wounds, and walk away.

But Zeus Berger doesn’t walk away from anything.

Especially when she’s the only woman in the world who might be able to handle me.

Zeus’s book did not disappoint. I loved it. It was funny, it was sweet, it had a badass heroine and a hero who can’t get enough of her badassness. The book starts out with Zeus crashing a party dressed in women’s clothing and the wildness just keeps going on from there. I LOVED THIS BOOK. That’s all I’m giving you. Go pick it up and discover the awesomeness for yourself.

THE VERDICT: The more I read by this author the more I want. I think the next release in this series comes out in April and you can bet that I’ll be gobbling it up on release day.

Barbarian’s Beloved by Ruby Dixon – AMZ

My tribesmates don’t understand her. The other humans think she’s weak. But no one knows my mate like I do. They don’t see her gentle heart or her brave spirit. I know why she struggles. I know how strong she is. And I know I’ll do anything to make her smile.

But can I convince her that she can be happy in this strange new world with me?

This story explores the long-awaited romance of Ariana and Zolaya. Even though it is a ‘flashback’ to the beginning of the Ice Planet Barbarians series, it can be read out of order. Enjoy!

This couple was skipped over when the original tribe members were getting their stories told. Now Ms. Dixon has gone back in time and given Ariana and Zolaya their own book. I enjoyed it, but then again I think I enjoy every single book this author as released to date.

THE VERDICT: Ready for March’s release.

Natural Witch by K.F. Breene – AMZ

Something has always been missing from my life. A hole that I could never seem to fill.

When I accidentally turn a coven of witches into nightmares, I find out what that something is.

Magic.

And it turns out, I have a crap load of it.

As a latent power awakens deep inside of me, I’m exposed to one of the most powerful and corrupt organizations in the magical world—the Mages’ Guild.

Barely knowing a spell from a few swear words and luck, I won’t be able to evade them alone.

And that’s when I meet him.

The Rogue Natural. The best and most feared mage in the world.

He’s dangerous, mysterious, and has a vendetta of his own. He is now the only thing between me and magical enslavement.

This is the first book in the Magical Mayhem, with is connected to the Fire and Ice world. Penny appeared in the original Fire and Ice Trilogy and I was kind of excited to find out readers would getting the opportunity to know her better. She’s charming, and smart and stuck with an overprotective mother. In Natural Witch gets caught up with a Mage, goes on the run, and finally starts to learn about her magic.

Side note: Although this book seems to run concurrently with book two (I think) of the original series, and a few characters make appearances, I do think you can read this book as a stand-a-lone.

THE VERDICT: Ready for book two.

WHAT’S UP NEXT:

The Worst Best Man by Lucy Score – AMZ

The bride is a doll. The groom is the perfect gentleman. But the rest of the wedding party? They’re the stuff of nightmares. Rich? Check. Vapid? Double Check. Entitled? Not enough checks in the world. And the Best Man? More like the Worst Man.

But Maid of Honor Franchesca takes her duties seriously. Kidnapped groom? She’s got this. Rude attendees? You just watch her handle them. So a best man with a big attitude and an even bigger…checkbook? Yeah, there’s no way she’s going to let that pretentious, judgmental jackhole ruin her best friend’s wedding. No matter how sexy he is. (Well, that’s the plan anyway…)

Aiden Kilbourn doesn’t do long-term relationships. He’s busy ruling the business world, and has yet to find a woman he can tolerate for longer than a month, two at the outside. Conquering the unconquerable is basically his bread and butter. And he hasn’t met a challenge that he can’t win. But Franchesca Baranski? This smart-mouthed girl from Brooklyn may just be his downfall.

Dog with a Bone by Hailey Edwards – AMZ

Half-bloods with Thierry’s skill set are given two options. They can join the conclave’s marshal program, or they can pack their bags. Turn down the job offer, and you’ve just shredded your residency pass for the mortal realm and booked yourself a one-way ticket to Faerie.

Texas is the only home Thierry has ever known, and she’s not going anywhere. Even if it means following in her notorious father’s footsteps as a peacekeeper. But pinning on the badge opens her eyes to the fact sometimes fae need protection too, and that sometimes humans are the real monsters.

Bad for the Boss by Talia Hibbert – AMZ

Book One of the Just For Him series. These Dirty British Romances will have you gripping the edge of your seat!

What a way to fall from grace…

Theodore Chamberlain is notorious for his razor-sharp focus, his terrifying temper, and his anti-social tendencies. What most people don’t know is that the powerful businessman is just as demanding in the bedroom as he is at the office.

So when model employee Jennifer Johnson stumbles into his life, Theo turns his infamous intensity towards a masterful seduction. The plus-sized knockout may be the office’s angel, but only Theo sees the flames simmering beneath.

Jen knows better than to risk the job she desperately needs for a relationship that can’t last. But when a threat from her dark past surfaces, Theo overturns her protests to protect her from the danger.

Can he save Jennifer from the evil that stalks her, or is time running out for this happily ever after?

Underneath It All by Kate Canterbary – AMZ

If I had known I’d have a hot architect balls deep inside of me before the end of the weekend, I’d have made time for a pedicure.

Lauren
It’s all the little things—the action plans, the long-kept promises—that started falling apart when my life slipped into controlled chaos.

After I met Matthew Walsh.

I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to run screaming or rip his pants off, and most days I wanted a little of both. If I was being honest with myself, it was rip his pants off, ride him like a workhorse, and then run screaming.

Matthew
A rebellious streak ran through Lauren Halsted. It was fierce and unrelentingly beautiful, and woven through too many good girl layers to count, and she wasn’t letting anyone tell her what to do.

Unless, of course, she was naked.

She wasn’t looking for me and I sure as shit wasn’t looking for her, but we found each other anyway and now we were locked in a battle of wills, waiting for the other to blink.

Sometimes the universe conspires to bring people together. Other times, it throws people down a flight of stairs and leaves them in a bruised and bloodied heap.

Blood Oath by Raye Wagner and Kelly St. Clare – AMZ

Dark Fantasy. Dragons. Intrigue. Romance.

More than anything, I crave adventure. But in the disease ridden land of Verald, life is mapped out much like the well-established rings of our kingdom.

At the very heart reigns our vicious king and Lord Irrik, an invincible dragon shifter, at his side. Their power poisons the land and the people, leading to a steadily mounting number of enemies.

But change is coming.

When the rebellion surges, the king strikes back. Captured by Lord Irrik, I’m suddenly embroiled in a deadly game. One where I’m desperate to understand the rules.

Because I’m not only fighting for my life… but also a love that could be the very key to my freedom.
