Let’s Get To Know Carol Cadoo
Q: What are the top five books that have influenced your career?

A: I decided to be a writer in the fourth grade when I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn I’ve said many times it was the first time I was moved emotionally by the written word. But the question became what to write. It was a long journey so I had a variety of books that were age growth. For Instance loved Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew. I loved to see the series books all lined up neatly in my bookcase. Funny side note I get the same feeling when I see my covers on book sites. So definitely I would have to say those two.
Then I read The Promise by Danielle Steel and knew that i loved that genre of Contemporary Womens’ Fiction and want to include Scruples in that as well. Judith Krantz writes a great book. So I guess what i discovered through the journey of books is I like writing strong, flawed women who love deeply and don’t always make the right choices. But in the end they find the way to Happily Ever After alone or with someone else.

Q: If you could go back in time before you published your first book, what advice would you give yourself about publishing?

A: Oh my dear friend, sit down and let me give you a reality check and please remember I’m coming from a place of love but . . . take your time and know that while you are anxious to get the process moving it is a long journey. So, be kind to yourself and prepare your heart for all that is about to assault it good and bad. But above all get ready to grow and unfortunately it’s no less painful than adolescents. So check your ego at the door, open your ears. and in the words of Betty Davis “Buckle up it’s going to be a bumpy ride.”

Q: What’s your favorite AND least favorite thing about being a writer/author?

A: My favorite thing would be actually doing what so many people want to do. It’s scary to start writing a book and think of all the blank pages that you’re expected to fill in with brilliant, witty and meaningful words. So I think there is a percentage of people who never break free of the fear to write. I also like watching all the pretend people come to life on the pages after having them live in my head for however long they are in there before the tell me to hit the print button.
What I like least is that there is no one to blame if stuff doesn’t get done. It’s up to me to meet the deadlines and keep the train on the tracks. It’s the difference between Indie and Traditionally published authors or writers.

Jazz thought about her advice to Clancy should she call Gianni tonight? Why should she have to wait? He didn’t mind, she had already called him late, why would he care about two in the afternoon? What the heck, she’d do it. It would be nice to talk with him, and she was excited about seeing him, pregnant or not.
She would tell him that way he would have all Thanksgiving weekend to get used to the idea. When he brought Sierra back, they could talk. Jazz walked through the lobby and towards her office, followed by the eyes of most of her employees.
The last couple of months had been kind to Jazz. Everyone on the staff noticed it. No one could figure out what to attribute it to, but they were pleased. She was developing into a happier person. Not that she was morose before, just not happy. Closing her door and flipping the lock, she giggled like a schoolgirl.
She felt as free as a kid out of school on a snow day. Dialing the number, Jazz glanced down at the beginnings of her Christmas shopping list. At least she would have time to shop. Thanksgiving weekend sales were always a cathartic experience. It was fun to go spend too much money, fight the crowds and get into the spirit. She jotted down a few more notes on the list.
“Gianni Payne’s Office, how can I help you?” Alicia’s smooth voice dripped across the phone lines.
“May I speak to Gianni, please?”
“Who’s calling?”
“Come on Alicia, its Jazz Kelley.”
“I’m sorry, Ms. Kelley. Mr. Payne is writing this afternoon. Can I take a message?”
No way. Jazz drew the line if Gianni didn’t care to speak with her, fine. He would make that decision, not Alicia.
“Excuse me, is Gianni working there?”
“Yes, he is.”
“Great, I need you to let him know Sierra’s mother is on the phone. I’ll hold, thank you.”
“I beg your pardon. I think I’ve made it clear Gianni does not want disruption. Listen, Jazz, I don’t mean to be rude. I can either take a message or hang up the phone.”
Jazz became incensed at Alicia her nerve. “I think you are trying to be rude so I suggest if you would like to keep your job longer than twenty minutes. You let Gianni know I’m on the phone. If you think I’m playing games, try me, Alicia, you do not want to provoke me.”
Too bad Patrick wasn’t here, Jazz was sure he would have given her a standing ovation. There was no response from Alicia. The next voice was Gianni’s as usual it was smooth, warm, and very sensual.
“Hey baby, what’s happening with you? Hearing your voice is an unexpected nice surprise. I was planning on calling tonight. After I took care of all the problems we discussed.”
“Well, you can’t resolve them fast enough for me, but I didn’t call to talk about that. Alicia is your problem. You’re welcome to her. I’ve decided you’re right about us. I’d like to accept your invitation to dinner Wednesday night before Sierra’s program. That is if you are still interested.” Jazz waited a full two minutes with no response from Gianni before she spoke again. “You’re still interested. Right?”
“You’re kidding?”
“No, I’m not. Is it too late?”
“It’s perfect. I’m excited. Should I pick you up or meet me? Gee, honey, I’m so happy, where do you want to go? Anywhere in the world, you name it.”
“Given all the time restraints with Sierra’s Thanksgiving Pageant local would be the best. You know, it will thrill Sierra when the two of us walk in together. So let’s say six? Does that work for you? That gives us two hours.”
“Sure. Where? I’ve never been to Cayucos in my life.”
“There’s a beautiful little restaurant called Schooners. You can’t miss it. The restaurant sits right on the pier. Why don’t we meet there?”
“Super. Listen, have you thought about Thanksgiving weekend in New York?”
“I think dinner might be enough. I want to give you a few things to consider we can talk when you bring Sierra home.”
“That sounds serious.”
“It is.”
“I don’t care. You can’t scare me away, Jazz. I’ll enjoy dinner, no matter how serious the conversation. I can’t wait to see you.”
“Ditto Gianni, see you tomorrow night. Gianni, for the record I don’t want to scare you away. Please remember that. You would make my life a darker place if that happened.”
“Bye. Give Sierra a kiss for me.”
