Fiona is 25 and close to finishing an MBA. She has a handsome boyfriend who works in finance. For now, she lives with her mother in her late grandmother’s old house in Pittsburgh. On the first floor they run the Enchanted Garden Café. The name comes from the lovely backyard, which features a fountain that her mother insists has magical properties. The house and café are in a cute and quirky neighborhood, and Fiona loves the people and shops surrounding them.

That doesn’t mean she doesn’t want to escape, to a more sensible life. Her mother has always been pretty hippie-dippie and impulsive, and Fiona always worries about how Claire would fare without her help.

But a big corporation is trying to buy their shop and others on the street and turn the neighborhood into parking and boring businesses. Fiona can’t let that happen.

Amidst all of this, Fiona finds herself a bit unnerved when a man comes into the café to help with their weekend music nights for a few months. Matthew Monroe is pretty irresistible with his sexy French pirate looks. But she must resist him. She loves her steady and dependable boyfriend. And she has to focus on how to save the neighborhood.

But perhaps he could be just what she — and the neighborhood — need. Fiona just has to open her heart a little and believe in magic.

The Enchanted Garden Café is exactly what one would expect: a mostly light, romantic story featuring some quirky characters who may not be related by blood but who consider each other family. The main character is a bit uptight and doesn’t believe in anything not provable. But things happen and change her mind. It’s an easy read and satisfies when you’re looking for this type of story.

Rated: High. Profanity includes around 10 instances of moderate profanity, a few uses of mild language, and a couple of instances of the name of Deity in vain. Sexual content is what makes this high: most of the book feels like a mild, so then I was a bit surprised there were several detailed sex scenes toward the end. Violence includes an attack that puts a man in the hospital and includes blood.
