Molly has moved on nicely since that ghastly experience chronicled in The Maid. She has a reliable boyfriend, a position of responsibility, and a very capable and skilled protege. How simply fabulous life can be. Now, she has been granted the task of preparing the hotel’s freshly remodeled Tea Room on behalf of a world-renowned local author. This recluse wishes to emerge from his sanctum and speak to the world. The maid staff (with Molly’s precise directions) take special care to ensure that every detail is absolutely perfect for this wondrous occasion. This is going to be an event to remember.

Which it certainly becomes, when someone drops dead in front of everyone in the completely filled room. Chaos ensues while Molly desperately tries to maintain a calm demeanor and preserve the hotel’s reputation. Her former nemesis, Detective Stark, is assigned to the case, and she still has very little patience for (or trust in) Molly. Her co-workers are all behaving oddly as well, further mystifying this determined Head Maid, who must gather her wits and try to find the threads of truth in a complicated, decades-old tapestry of human relations.

Once again, Nita Prose utilizes excellent, er, prose, to provide readers with a tremendous Mystery from the vantage point of a woman who does not see or think like everyone else. But this mild-mannered protagonist sees things that others do not and comprehends much, much more than anyone gives her credit for. Molly is quite possibly the most interesting and likable heroine of the 21st century (thus far), thanks to this skilled writer. Not only do readers get an enjoyable whodunit, but we are also given the opportunity to think about those persons in our own lives who are not quite mainstream and consider how we may perhaps be more judgmental than we ought to be.

Rated: Mild. Just over two dozen mild expletives and 5 vain usages of Deity.
