On the island of Raddith, anyone can create a life-destroying curse, but only one person has the power to unravel them. Kellen doesn’t fully understand his talent for unraveling curses, but he’s made a reputation for himself helping those who have been transformed maliciously. Among those he’s helped is Nettle, a girl who was once trapped in bird form but is now his constant companion and closest ally.

But Kellen has also been cursed, and unless he and Nettle can find a way to remove his curse, Kellen is in danger of unraveling everything, and everyone, around him.

Frances Hardinge is a master of creating original, highly imaginative stories full of atmosphere and dark whimsy — a strange magic which is revealed within the first few pages when readers are introduced to the strange island of Raddith, its dark bog by the sea, and its creepy spidery creatures referred to only as “Little Brothers.”

While at first the plot may sound simple, Unraveller quickly develops into a story filled with deeper meaning. In a world of hate-driven magic, this book discusses the power of pain and anger (as well as the consequences of keeping your anger and resentment bottled until it becomes something you’re unable to control) and counters this with learning to find peace and forgiveness, making it an oddly powerful story that may resonate with its readers.

Rated: Mild, for one use of moderate language. Violence includes injuries, blood, and a few deaths. Several dis-enchanted characters are naked when returned to human form. There is no sexual content.
