Spy×Family 2 (Spy×Family, Volume 2)

IN SHORT: This graphic novel continues the fun and Heartwarming Family Dynamics of the first in the series.

REVIEW

Master spy Twilight may be in over his head with his new mission. While he’s unparalleled in undercover work, he always works better alone. This time, though, he’ll need a family to succeed — one that doesn’t know he’s a spy.

The mission: Twilight must infiltrate the prestigious Eden Academy in order to get close to his target, Donovan Desmond. Getting his adopted daughter, Anya, into the academy is easier said than done. Getting her to befriend Donovan’s arrogant son, Damien, and become an exemplary student in the process is another thing entirely.

While this volume of Spy×Family pivots more to focus on Anya as she enrolls in her new school, the heartwarming family dynamics are still there, as in volume 1. Twilight (aka Loid Forger) is just as focused as ever on the mission and its success, but as time passes, he slowly develops a soft spot for Anya. Similarly, Yor (fake wife and secret assassin) struggles with her own insecurities as a caretaker even as she forms a mother-daughter bond with Anya.

The twist of the fake family trope is one I loved more than I expected. It’s a fun concept, made even more exciting when one is a spy, one an assassin, and one a telepathic child who knows all about her “parents” and what they do.

Overall, I’m surprised by how fast this series gripped my attention and my heart. Spy×Family continues to prove to be an entertaining and wholesome series.
