My Favorite Sources for Free Ebooks/Audiobooks

Even while I was away from blogging, I was still reading a lot - sometimes, listening to an audiobook or two. Reading is that one thing in my life that has to remain constant no matter how busy or chaotic it gets.

Here are some of my favorite retailers and websites for free ebooks and audiobooks

Retailers
  • Smashwords - I love Smashwords and it was the first retailer I subscribed to. I love it that books are available in multiple formats. An event I always look forward to is their annual Summer/Winter Sale which takes place in July.
  • Google Play Books - I couldn't access this site before due to geo restrictions but that has changed now.
  • Amazon - Need I say more?
  • Kobo - Ebooks are available in epub and PDF formats. Some PDF books have DRM though.
N.B. Some titles that are free in one retailer may not be free or available in another.

Websites
  • Prolific Works (formerly Instafreebie) - My favorite! They have an app and books come in multiple formats as well. I have my own Library of all the titles I've claimed. When claiming a freebie, I am given the option to subscribe to the author's newsletter or not.
  • BookFunnel - They don't email readers directly. One has to sign up for an author's newsletter who uses BookFunnel to know about promos. One thing I don't like about their service, though, is that I have to sign up to an author's newsletter most of the time I want to get a book even if I have already subscribed to that author before. To be fair, some authors allow you to download their books directly.

  • Internet Archive - Their archive offers a lot aside from books and audiobooks.
  • Open Library - I can borrow a maximum of 5 books for 14 days. Once I'm done with one book, I return it immediately so I can have another one.
  • *The University of Chicago Press - UCP offers a free title every month. The link is valid for a year. Options to download are available depending on your platform. I use Adobe Digital Editions for PC and Android to read my books.

  • Loyal Books - They have audiobooks and books that are in the public domain.
  • LibriVox - An old favorite and this site offers audiobooks that are in the public domain. They celebrated their 14th anniversary last August 10.
  • Lit2Go - This one is similar to the previous two. Sometimes an ebook is included to read along with the audiobook.
  • Open Culture - Aside from books and audiobooks, this site has a massive listing covering a wide range of interests.
  • Getfreeaudiobooks - This site was a surprise for me when I discovered it. There are no sign ups required but you must have an Audible account. Be forewarned! The selection isn't that great but you might find a gem or two. Hey! Free is free so I'm not complaining. Only one free audiobook is allowed per week.
  • *Audiobooksync - Caters to teens (and adults I should say!) and offers free downloads for a limited time during certain months. This year, the promo ran from April 25 to August 1.
These are my top go-to sources where I get my reading and listening fix. There may be more out there that I may not be aware of  that you might know. Kindly share them by leaving a comment below.

Thank you for stopping by!
