Go Hex Yourself by Jessica Clare | Book Review

Every autumn I gorge myself on seasonally appropriate books. Go Hex Yourself by Jessica Clare is absolutely spooky season appropriate. It took me a little longer than is my typical to get through this book, but by the end I thought it was quite an okay read. I am at the point where I would definitely check the sequel out of the library. This book started off pretty good as well.

Go Hex Yourself follows Reggie who has been hired on to be a familiar. She applies for the job thinking that it is to be an executive assistant for this company that makes her favorite card game which sounds similar to Magic: The Gathering. As it turns out, no, she’s been hired by this witch named Dru who is very, very old. Dru has a nephew, Ben, who is super rude to Reggie. As it turns out, Reggie and Ben eventually are attracted to each other. They really begin to give into the attraction when working together to get to the bottom of who has cursed Aunt Dru.

I was having fun reading Go Hex Yourself. However, at some point it got into my head that this was apparently Reylo fanfic? So then I was reading it from that angle and was like wow, they really just filed off the serial numbers, huh? For example, Ben’s full name is Caliban Magnus but he goes by Ben instead of Cal. Why? Well, isn’t Kylo Ren’s actual name Ben? It was a lot. And then I was looking at the cover and was like, wow that male character illustration kind of looks like Adam Driver. And then the descriptions of Ben’s character just got to be a little too much for me. I did, however, enjoy the concept of familiars and cursing people using tablets — stone tablets not iPads. I also really liked Reggie. There’s spicy scenes too — but not an overwhelming amount.
