A Mirror Mended by Alix E. Harrow | Novella Review

I was so excited to dive into A Mirror Mended by Alix E. Harrow. This novella was the sequel to A Spindle Splintered – which I LOVED. It stands to reason this novella would be just as good. It turns out though that this novella wasn’t quite my favorite. I still respect it though and respect those who will love this book — why wouldn’t I?

A Mirror Mended finds Zinnia at a crossroads. She’s been in and out of so many Sleeping Beauty stories at this point. Actually, Zinnia is kind of bored with the whole thing. It also turns out, a lot of the time that the various sleeping beauties can rescue themselves. One day, she finds herself drawn into a different story. You see, she somehow was summoned into the tale of Snow White. Not by Snow White herself, but by the Evil Queen. Now, Zinnia has to navigate a whole new fairy tale and potentially rescue the Evil Queen. Also, she had a falling out with her best friend, Charm, so there’s a lot going on.

I did like that A Mirror Mended  related to Snow White. The exploration of the Evil Queen and her motivations was unique and kind of interesting. Also, Zinnia was quite determined. I did not love the falling out with Charm. It didn’t really add anything to the story for me. Also, this novella just felt more slow paced as compared to the first one. But, I think the fact that there’s sapphic representation is awesome. On the whole, this wasn’t my favorite BUT I think it is worth picking up if you want a short, sapphic take on Snow White.
