The Deal by Elle Kennedy | Book Review

The Deal by Elle Kennedy came into my mailbox along with the rest of the Off Campus series and that was just the push I needed to read this Book. Also? Spicy Booktok has kind of convinced me to try more spicy books even though typically that is NOT my wheelhouse. Once I realized this book had a picture of a girl in her skivvies on the cover — somehow my eyes always skipped over that — I realized I couldn’t read this at work on a lunch break. Oh, no no my friends. So, in bits and pieces I read this book at home.

The Deal is about main characters Hannah and Garrett who are in a philosophy ethics class together at Briar University. There is a big test that everyone fails except Hannah who has managed to score an A Plus. Garrett sees this and begs her to tutor him as he needs to keep his grades up in order to play on the hockey team. So, Hannah and Garrett strike a deal. She will tutor him and in exchange he will pretend to be dating her so that she can catch the eye of a football player she has been crushing on. Only, it turns out that there is some real physical chemistry between the two and maybe the feelings are actually real.

I am a little surprised at how much I liked The Deal by Elle Kennedy. Honestly you should absolutely check trigger warnings before reading — particularly has Hannah has been a victim of sexual assault in her past. I liked the vulnerability between the two leads. We all know they’re going to get together but the way the book goes about that makes it hard to set down. Also, I loved the interactions between the hockey players. They’re a great group and this book does a good job setting up for the rest of the series which will feature various players from this book.

After finishing, I felt a little sad that I couldn’t just quickly go on to the next book as I have some other obligations to meet first. However, I do plan on continuing on with the series. For the first book I’ve picked up that could be considered more spicy than normal, this wasn’t too bad. I did like the development of the relationship and that the plot threads actually did go somewhere.
